Join SCHPA and NHPA
The Southern California Horseshoe Pitchers Association (SCHPA) is an extension of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA); and, if you enjoy year-round organized horseshoe pitching and you live in the southern half of California, these are the associations you MUST join! Joint membership in both associations is granted by simply completing the membership application form and paying the very low annual membership dues. The following membership divisions are offered:
Open Men -- male of any age pitching from 40 feet.
Open Women -- female of any age pitching from 30 feet.
Junior Girls -- female under age 19 pitching from 30 feet.
Junior Boys -- male under age 19 pitching from 30 feet.
Cadet Girls -- female under age 13 pitching from 20 feet.
Cadet Boys -- male under age 13 pitching from 20 feet.
Elder Men -- male over age 64 pitching from 30 feet.
Exempt Men -- male of any age with approved medical exemption pitching from 30 feet with Elder Men.
You are assigned an NHPA player number that stays with you for your horseshoe playing career and an official membership card you use to certify your current membership information when entering a tournament. Your SCHPA/NHPA membership allows you to enter and play in scheduled NHPA-sanctioned tournaments throughout the United States. See the Schedule & Clubs page for when and where tournaments are planned throughout the year in the southern half of California. Unsure what you want to do? Feel free to drop by the next tournament located near you and watch the action. Ask the players questions in between games. Look up the Tournament Director and ask how the tournament is organized, how many winners there will be, what prizes are given out, and anything else you may want to know. Our tournaments usually run from 10 o'clock in the morning to around 1 o'clock in the afternoon. There are small groups of players with similar skill levels and each group holds its own round robin format tournament with prizes for each group's first and second place winners.
Are you a new member? Here is some new member orientation information to help you understand what to expect at your very first organized tournament. Special new member offer: If you join after September, your membership is good for the remainder of the current year and all of the following calendar year!

Getting StartedTournament Director, the tournament director will announce any changes in the game format and will announce prior to play how ties are determined. In most games, forty shoes are pitched.
Cancellation, is a format where the ringers and points are recorded, however, if both pitchers have a ringer, the ringer will be recorded but neither pitcher is awarded points. Count All, is a format where all scoring is recorded. Ringers Only, is a format where all ringers are counted and each ringer counts 1 point. Never pick up your shoes until you and your opponent have agreed on the score. If you can't agree, ask a pitcher on a neighboring court or the tournament director to judge. One ringer is worth 3 points and may be called as "one ringer, three points." If the person who scored the ringer has their other shoe six inches or less from the stake and their shoe is closer than their opponents shoes, then they would call out "one ringer and one point". Two ringers by the same opponent is worth 6 points and may be called as "two ringers, six points". If both pitchers each have a ringer and no shoe is worth a point, the person who pitched last will call the score "two dead, no points". If both pitchers each have a ringer, then the person whose shoe is closest to the stake will receive one point. This is called as "two dead, one point" and is called by the person who earned the point. Shoes must be six inches or less from the stake. It may be possible that neither pitcher receives a point. NHPASCHPA is a charter member of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA).
The NHPA provides support to local charters and hosts the annual world tournament. Some of the support includes the RGS (Rules Requirements Guideline Specifics). The RGS sets rules so that all tournaments will be consistent with set guidelines no matter which state you may pitch in, and with your membership current you may pitch in any state. The NHPA also records pitching ringer percentages for all NHPA members in the country. SCHPA Tournament Directors submit tournament results to the NHPA and they are kept for 12 months. Championships
